That's pretty much my view too. I like KDE4. I liked KDE3. I like
Gnome too, along with a few others. KDE4 and KDE3, however, don't feel
like different revisions of the same thing. They seem more different
than, for instance, KDE3 and Gnome.

That said, I never was that familiar with KDE3 or Gnome. KDE4 is, in a
way, my first real Linux desktop.

Not sure I agree. It's still available and usable. If the lack of
updates becomes a problem for enough people, well, the source is still
out there too.

If anything, the fact that this hasn't happened yet suggests that KDE4
is, for most people, a success.

This is an annoyancd for me as well and greatly differes from Gnome.
The only was I've found to create a document is to go inot Dolphin. I
always use Gnaome by default - the latewst KDE4 is still unstable.

You can do it..
For a bar on the top of the screen: right click desktop, unlock widgets.
right click again, add panel. click the new panel's 'cashew thingy' and you
will see a screen edge button. click and drag on that to the top of the
screen.

For a desktop folder view.. You can either add a folder view plasmoid/widget
to your desktop, or have the whole desktop be a folder view. Right click
desktop and click desktop settings. Change Type to folder view.
