Thanks. I guess Snow Leopard is Intel-only, so we can rule out the

I haven't seen any suggestion that there is a magic undocumented
sequence to access a built-in EFI shell, because there is no such shell
in the Mac's firmware.

I have seen mention of a mechanism to boot off a specially prepared
volume which _includes_ an EFI shell, via rEFIt, but never tried it.

Try a Google search on "efi console shell mac" (without the quotes).

I've used rEFIt once. Nothing much to tell other than it's not going to
be very useful for most folks.
