I've just tried to print something and for the first time using SL, the ink
is running low. On the print dialog there's a violently unsightly amber
button marked Supplies... which, when I click, takes me directly to Apple's
US shop (sorry, 'store').

I'm then taken through a checklist to find out what printer I'm using. Out of
curiosity, I followed this chain, to discover it doesn't work - it leads
nowhere.

Horrible, commercial, inelegant, US-centric, wrong...

I've been using Snow Leopard both at home and at work for months. I use
an Epson inkjet at home and another at work, plus there are also the
Phasers at work, and I haven't seen that button come up for any of them
when they're low on ink (thank heavens, or I may have had to kill
someone).

Coo. I don't get that with my Canon inkjet or HP laser.

Indeed. I vaguely recall some Windows drivers - probably HP inkjet -
doing something very similar, years ago. Never worked.

I didn't have that precise notification when my toner was running low -
got the warning and links to things slightly differently, but in the
print dialgue and it worked okay. Sounds like it's a printer driver
specific thingy, that. HP LJ1320n here.

Not gonna buy another HP for all sorts of reasons, but the thing does
just keep on churning out pages without often suffering hiccups and the
fact that it's PS means I don't have to put up with another fuckin'
'orrible HP printer driver.

Do remember that as far as the average US businessman is concerned, the
96% of the human race that lives outside the USA is an unimportant
minority group in the world that gets attention only when the important
people - the Great American Public - has been serviced, and of course
all us little foreigners will be perfectly happy with whatever works for
the Great American Public.

That's why we used to have to buy US-letter-sized fanfold paper for our
computer printers...

Rowland.
