No, they expect most people who use their stuff to not pay up front for
it in an obvious way.

.... in part because it's so cheap. Make it cheap enough, and people
won't feel the need to steal. That's the ticket.

I wasn't suggesting that this model replace the existing ways of
obtaining software. It could supplement it.

But from an application sales point of view, it is only really the
owners of machines made in the last 4 or so years that will be buying
the majority of software

That was always my gut feeling about it, but all the studies I have
seen, and conversations with software authors shows that sadly price is
only a trivial factor

With the iPhone I would imagine it is just that without unlocking your
phone, there is no way to do it
