From: Mike Lane on 4 Jan 2010 17:21 For some reason Mail (4.2) recently stopped giving audible alerts when mail is received. I've checked the preferences altered the 'New messages sound' to something different with no change. My sound system otherwise is working normally. Can anyone suggest a cause and preferably a cure? Thanks -- Mike Lane UK North Yorkshire email: mike_lane at mac dot com

Using the toolbar, select Accounts. 3. Click Advanced. 4. At the bottom of the screen, to the left of the "New Account" button, there is a checkbox labeled Use IDLE command if the server supports it. Try unticking this. This should bring the sounds back. This has been a bug with mail for a good few years. Best -James-

As a matter of interest, what is the IDLE command, and what's the effect of not using it? -- Mike Lane UK North Yorkshire email: mike_lane at mac dot com

The iPhone uses this sort of thing for push I think. The idea is that whenever the box for idle is unchecked, mail just schedules reconnections to the server every 5 minutes or however frequent you set it up in the main preferences. I could be entirely wrong though. Best -James-
