To prove that a sequence is strictly increasing Hi, I have a maths problem which asks to show that if x_0 > 3, then the sequence x_(n+1) = ((x_n)^2 + 6)/5 is strictly increasing. I do know the difference between a sequence that is said to be increasing or strictly increasing. However, the only way I can see why this is the case is by using a cobweb plot. Plot y =... 1 Mar 2010 09:10

A constant speed of light in all reference frames? Surely you can't be serious. I'm no physicist, so I've wondered after learning some about special relativity why the speed of light is constant in all reference frames. It makes sense that the speed of a traveling object is relative to reference frame. For example, people sitting in the same car we are sitting in appear to us to be at rest,... 28 Feb 2010 06:42

Generalizing Carnot To Include Fuel Cells Carnot is almost two centuries old and only covers heat engines. With the increasing interest in fuel cells it would be nice to have something that covers fuel cells as well as heat engines. The similarities in processes as well as results between low pressure ratio highly recuperated gas turbines and fuel cell... 10 Mar 2010 10:49
THE MYSTERY OF THE CARROT. OH PARSNIP, WHEREFORE ART THOU? Pentcho Valev wrote: What is the probability that Mr. X looks like Mr. Y? aether propulsion ? ok , aether fans , here is a big question. if aether exists , why isnt there an eather propulsion ? i know UFO propulsion is often associated with that , and also the coral castle - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hr9U1cP68eU and related stuff such as the lonocraft http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ionocraft... 6 Mar 2010 18:29
Arcs And Marks Here is a game for any plural number of players. Needed: blank paper, pencil and compass (the circle-drawing kind), maybe a protractor. First, draw a circle on a piece of paper, relatively large. Let m be a multiple of the number of players playing this game. m should be >= 8, at least, I suggest. Draw ... 26 Feb 2010 19:48
An Ultrafinite Set Theory I searched for "ultrafinite set theory" and all I found was a remark by Zermelo: "The 'ultrafinite antinomies of set theory', which the scientific reactionaries and anti-mathematicians eagerly and delightedly call on in their campaign ..." I get the impression Zermelo didn't like ultrafinitists. There were ... 19 Mar 2010 19:01
integration limit notation I'm looking at a book that solves a differential equation with integrating factor. In the end that get something like: L(x) = exp( int_^x()dx ) Note that they omit the lower limit of integration and just keep the upper limit of integration. What does this mean? Is this a shortcut where the lower integration li... 25 Feb 2010 14:50 |
