Adobe Reader disables Print to PDF in its print dialog (and I expect the
same applies to the web browser plugin). You are supposed to use the
Save As command instead (which can be selectively disabled by the author
of a PDF).

That should work fine, in pieces if the document is too large to view in
the window.

You could also install CUPS_PDF which emulates a real printer but
produces PDFs. It will also produce a PDF from applications which
prohibit the "print to PDF" (e.g. Adobe Reader).

But not before you reveal an inability to resist quoting lots of
totally inconsequential small talk. I heard a theory that this
inability is a major criterion of a troll in the wild, but I do
admit, they are rarely caught and intensively examined.
