From: Jim on 13 Mar 2010 02:01 Just had a rather weird thing happen. I was testing out the 'Ignore ownership on this volume' option since I sometimes like to VNC in to my machine over my lunch break and do a spot of Cocoa coding. For this I've created a second user account that has a blank desktop and a lower screen res, just to keep the bandwidth down a tad (VNC and two screens can be...slow). Hence, this machine has two user accounts, 'jim' and 'coder'. Both are admin accounts. I created a test project in a folder on a volume that now has 'ignore ownership' checked, quit Xcode, popped into the coder account, made sure the project compiled without giving me any write-protected errors (it did, yay), then closed it, quit Xcode and returned to my 'jim' account. Where all was not well. Attempting to open the same project gave me an error -10810 (I think). Stuff wouldn't launch from the Dock. The the Dock went away. Something, I forget what, gave me an 'unknown user 501' error. I had a Terminal window already open so I typed in 'whoami'. Instead of replying 'jim' it replied '501'. Attempts to shut down through the Apple menu failed so I force-power-off'd the machine and rebooted, where everything seems fine. Any clues as to what the heck just happened? There's nothing obvious to me) in the Console logs. What's your actual uid? I find the 'id' program quite useful when debugging name service problems. > Attempts to shut down through the Apple menu failed so I > force-power-off'd the machine and rebooted, where everything seems fine. > > Any clues as to what the heck just happened? As I said, there's nothing obvious in the console logs, but I'll freely admit to not knowing what to look for. (goes and checks) Hmmm. There's an 'Improper shutdown detected' for Directory Services at _about_ the right time, so I'd say yes. I wonder what caused that? Nothing especialy verbose - DirectoryService.error.log: 2008-05-31 08:14:48 BST - T[0xA07A7FA0] - Improper shutdown detected 2008-06-14 07:33:41 BST - T[0xA07A7FA0] - Improper shutdown detected 2008-06-14 20:27:03 BST - T[0xA07A7FA0] - Improper shutdown detected 2008-06-14 20:30:05 BST - T[0xA07A7FA0] - Improper shutdown detected 2008-06-15 10:21:24 BST - T[0xA07A7FA0] - Improper shutdown detected 2008-06-15 10:31:57 BST - T[0xA07A7FA0] - Improper shutdown detected 2008-06-15 10:33:28 BST - T[0xA07A7FA0] - Improper shutdown detected 2008-08-21 06:07:22 BST - T[0xA00BAFA0] - Improper shutdown detected 2008-09-20 19:43:07 BST - T[0xA00DAFA0] - Improper shutdown detected 2008-10-11 06:19:18 BST - T[0xA0215FA0] - Improper shutdown detected 2008-10-19 12:24:51 BST - T[0xA07F1FA0] - Improper shutdown detected 2008-10-19 15:20:38 BST - T[0xA07F1FA0] - Improper shutdown detected 2008-11-29 11:00:35 GMT - T[0xA0546FA0] - Improper shutdown detected 2009-06-08 18:49:22 BST - T[0xA0490720] - Improper shutdown detected 2009-12-26 08:58:05 GMT - T[0x00007FFF71084BE0] - Improper shutdown detected 2010-02-11 20:39:26 GMT - T[0x00007FFF70FC5BE0] - Improper shutdown detected 2010-03-13 06:37:13 GMT - T[0x00007FFF701B5BE0] - Improper shutdown detected As I say, the time for that last entry is about right, but this is the first time the 'unknown user 501' thing has happened despite Directory Service wibbling out a few times. I tend to blame Transmission. Or the Government.
