Sorry its taken a little while to get back to you with an update on this
problem.

I followed advice to replace the "xorg.conf" file (as root, since this
file is owned by root) with a copy from the Open SuSE 10.3 install.
Success !
I logged out, rebooted and got the expected graphical login screen. I
have checked and everything seems to work as expected. All the
(Alt+Ctrl+Fx) consoles are now present though there are no error logs
for them. There is a "var/log/Xorg.0log" and a "var/log/sax.log" both
of which I can post if needed. One file is about 49K and the other
around 25k in size.
