It does sound like a case of motherboard death... Hm,thinking with some concern of the cheap power supply Ibought for my ex-g/f's pboko (is it really naff to stil call them that?:D) -not from ebay but equally worryingly from el cheapo shop in Holloway... are there any stats on how reliable/unreliable/downright dangerous those cheap parts are? I've got one of those cheap replacement batteries in my macbook and despite any power management resets the display of remaining battery life is pure fiction -and it doesn't warn you it's going to die and go to sleep when it runs out of juice like the original battery, it just switches off without warning... -- flavio matani guitar tuition http://www.flaviomatani.co.uk http://fflavio.com

In fairness I have no proof whatsoever that it was the power supply that caused this, I'm just thinking in terms of "last thing changed". The laptop is five years old and was doing some fairly hefty lifting at the time (running the 0xED hex editor, which ramped up the fans). It might just have got a bit too warm once too often. I'm going to switch it off, remove the battery and leave it for the day. Maybe it'll come back. Maybe it won't. I have a MacBookPro with the original battery that does that, so I don't think you can blame the replacement. -- http://www.dream-weaver.com/email.php Web development promotion and seo http://www.spaldingcomputers.co.uk http://www.overseasmovingsolutions.com/

It could be something that's shutting it down because of an overload - hard disk drives often do this. The machine starts up, then the disk drive spins up, draws too much current, and everything turns off. Daniele

If that works it says that at least the disk, firewire and mobo are okay. -- Pd |
