I've tried it - the connected Mac never sees it.

Before you give up, and if you need it, get the hard drive out and see
if it works in a caddy. Saved me several weeks of not doing a backup
when mine died.

Ah, ok, data point noted. I hadn't seen that before; every laptop I'd
had would tell you it was running on reserve and send itself to sleep
when it 'thought' it was getting a bit close.

Good idea, just in case. It's what I would .. no, that's not true; what
I _would_ do would be to run around in circles screaming and trying any
bizarre thing that came out of googling for the symptoms....
