Have you tried resetting the PMU?
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431 gives details.
I had a similar problem with a couple of Macs which were fixed that
way (in one case by waiting in the repair shop so long - over 3 months
- that when I collected it unrepaired all the batteries were totally
flat and it booted up when I decided to give it just one more chance)

Oddly no, I haven't. I shall do so tomorrow, but the machine died whilst
in use so I'm not very hopeful.

I had a similar failure with a G4 Powerbook an, after trying all the
things I could think of together with all the suggestions I got here I
gave up and got a new machine a new machine.

Two weeks later - and with a different power supply it sprang back into
life and has been fine ever since...
