I assume then that you apply this word to your self. You are creating
a false reality where the word "their" is not considered an acceptable
substitute for "his or her." And you are trying to convince others
that this is true.

Even if one reads published, edited writing (and more so if one
listens to spoken writing, including among the educated) one has to
conclude that any writer who uses "their" for "his or her" can safely
count his or her self in the majority.

I believe the word in contention was "they".
