Right. It's also the case that a change on login screen made with
defaults write survives system updates, at least mine did.

After posting the above I discovered that Visage Login will only work if run
from an administrative account and not a user account. When run from an
administrator it works just fine, taking a JPG file, regardless of name, and
using that to create the login screen.

Which is no surprise, regarding the access rights to system files.

Interestingly, I just now checked and Visage Login is now able to work from
both administrative and user accounts. That it now does so is possibly a
result of my uninstalling and reinstalling it. If run from a user account you
are asked to supply the identity and password for an administrator account.

So now, as I take a deep breath, it seems that Visage Login is working
properly! :-)
