From: Jim on 22 Mar 2010 10:45 OK, it's running the http://connect OK now.. ...and will join the Windows 7 laptop to the new SBS2008 domain.. Part way through the connect computer wizard it says that it has found settings and documents belonging to users which it can import into the new user profile.. Well, problem number one is that it doesn't show me the name of the old domain user...so I cannot select the required profile ?? All I get offered is: None and Administrator. So I had to select none and continue... When it finished and restarted a couple of times I finally logged onto the new domain...guess what ? I had a new profile called: Peter.domain instead of just: Peter This is precisely what I'm trying to avoid..! Anyway, lets back track a little, I suspect that whatever I do uing the http://connect I'm going to end up with Peter.domain and not actually be using the single existing Peter profile from the old domain ? Maybe this is bearable *if* I can get it to transfer the documents and settings from the Peter profile into Peter.domain profile. Anyone any ideas why Peter isn't showing in the drop down list ? Jim. From: Jim on 22 Mar 2010 13:08 I'm pretty sure you'll *always* get the username.domain entry if there's already a username folder, regardless of which method you use. We never use the http://connect approach, we just add the computer to the domain manually - we don't use RWW so once we've added it there's nothing else left to do. You'll be able to transfer the documents trvially, but the settings probably won't come across - some will but many won't. From: Jim on 22 Mar 2010 19:22 That's what I thought...regards using http://connect We have a very good method that works for transferring XP machines between domains, been using it for years. I think I stumbled upon it in one of Harry Brelsford's books or a blog of his or something. It's a bit long winded and manual but it works and you get to keep the same profile as was. .. Once you get used to it you can transfer a machine in minutes and keep everything exactly the same as it was before, same profile name and everything. That's why we've pretty much never bothered with http://connect though it's probably perfectly suitable for use with new PC's. Trouble is we've tried the same approach with our custom method with Vista and Windows 7 and it doesn't work, most likely UAC gets in the way.. Anyway, your post caught me out ...another Jim ;-) If you're interested I can let you know how we usually do existing XP machines. Jim. From: Russ SBITS.Biz [SBS-MVP] on 22 Mar 2010 20:28 Actually you really should use the http://connect it does about 57 checks to make sure your PC is correct for adding to the domain. one important thing for laptops is it configures RPC over HTTPS for you. it does more than that but, IMO you should really use the wizard. I hope also you are using the Wizard to create users/ Otherwise they won't be in the correct OU. Most likely give this another look in the future if its as useful as you appear to indicate. Didn't resolve my initial problem though.. Jim.
