Have an SBS2008 installation.

The company has a Mail Archive mailbox which is around 8GB and has approx
60,000 messages in the inbox.

When users search through this from Outlook on their PC's it takes a very
very long time.

However on their previous SBS 2003 server in Exchange 2003 it was taking
nowhere near as long and searching was almost instant.

Any ideas why this large mailbox seems to be performing so mich slower than
it was before on their SBS 2003 setup ?

The new hardware for the SBS2008 is HP ML350G6 18GB RAM which is much faster
than their old SBS 2003 server.

Only other major change to their PC setup is their AV was upgraded from SAV
10 to SEP 11.

I might uninstall this from a PC and try again to see if this makes any
difference.

Meantime anyone any ideas ?

Jim.

OK, to refine this a little...

It's performing a 'Search' through the mailbox that is taking a very very
long time.

I can select the inbox of the MailArchive mailbox and all the data displays
pretty instantly, but when I type something to search for it does take an
very long time, several minutes before it comes back with any results at
all, the search results screen .

I'm informed by users that it used to take about ten to twenty seconds
before on Exchange 2003 and is now taking somewhere in the region of two to
ten minutes on Exchange 2007.

OK, here another thing they have just told me..

When they searched on their old SBS 2003 / Exchange 2003 setup the search
results were displayed bit by bit as it found entriers corresponding to the
search.

They are saying that now when they search on the new SBS 2008 / Exchange
2007 setup when they hit the search button no results are show at all in a
bit by bit fashion as before and the entire search result seems to come in
all at once at the end of the search.

Perhaps this is the difference ?

Is searching through and Exchange 2003 mailbox different to running a search
on an Exchange 2007 mailbox ?

Are the results of an Exchange 2007 mailbox search just displayed in one
single result at the end of a search as opposed to offering up entries as
they are found ?

Jim.

Any ideas anyone ?

Jim.

Has anything changed on the client side of things? What OS are you running?
What version of outlook? Were these components changed at or near the same
time as SBS?

Hi Cliff,

All the client PC's are Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 SP3

The only thing changed on the client PC's was the AV software.

Though as per my post below it seems that things have signifigantly chaged
regards searching mailboxes on Exchange 2007.

The main thing seems to be that the search results are not displayed as they
are found in a bit by bit fashion as on and SBS 2003 Exchange 2003 setup but
are rather all displayed in one tranche altogether at the end of the search
on SBS 2008 with Exchange 2007, this gives the impression to the end user
that nothing is actually happening.

Overall it probably taking a similar time to perform the search, but who
knows, but because no results are displayed until the end of the search then
it seems as if nothing is happening.

Jim.
