As with Elliot, I saw *exactly* these patterns with an overheating X1900
card - I very, very much doubt there's a software fix. Best option is
that the card is bunged up with dust, worst is that it's about to die
completely. Either way, I'd be looking at a hardware fix as the next
step if I were you.
