Hi --

On an SBS 2003 SP2 machine, I have four shared printers set up for printing
via IPP in addition to via normal Windows shares.

When I browse a Windows XP Pro (SP3) machine to the printers page at
http://hostname/printers, I see all the printers. However, if I select any
of the printers and click on Connect, eventually I will get the error

Printer Installation Failed

The driver files are not available for the current CPU platform. Please
contact your administrator to install proper driver files on the server.

Well, the proper drivers ARE installed on the server. These are Windows XP
machines trying to connect via IPP. The machines hardwired to the LAN at
that office are Windows XP, and they all got their drivers from the SBS box
when attaching the printers. So why is the IPP page telling me that the
correct drivers are not installed? How do I fix this?

Thanks,
CL

I'm not sure ...

And that article isn't clear as to which machine gets the hotfix ...

OK ...

I requested the hotfix (there's only one package for Win2003 ...) and
installed it on the server.

The hotfix did not solve the problem.

I click on Connect, I'm asked if I want to install the printer, I get the
"checking login info" message, then I get the "Printer Installation Failed"
message claiming that the printer driver is not installed.

Except that the printer driver IS installed ...

And I set up IPP for anonymous access. This is the reason why I'm doing this
via IPP.

The funny thing is that this is happening on three of the four printers
listed, and I can't figure out what's so special about that one printer.
They all have all necessary printer drivers installed. Three of the four
(including this one that works) are IP printers hanging directly off the
LAN. The fourth printer is attached via USB to the server.

Thanks
CL

Well ...

This is one of those "scratch your head and walk away" solutions ...

On the server, I opened Print Server Properties then selected the Drivers
tab.

I verified that each of the problematic printers had a Windows XP driver
(all of them had a "Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003" driver).

I selected each of these drivers and clicked Reinstall.

When I went back to the Windows XP box, I was able to Connect to each one of
the printers. The server served the printer driver for each printer.
