I tried both JF and Michael's suggestions without success. Here is
what happened ...

Trying to do port rsync ...

This has to be some kind of problem on your side. I just tried to rsync files
from rsync.macports.org, and it worked fine. Maybe it's only a temporary
situation. Otherwise you may want to try a different server from the list at

http://trac.macports.org/wiki/Mirrors

I tried one of the other mirrors and got the same cryptic error. Any
ideas on how to troubleshoot this further?

davea-mbp2:WEB-INF davea$ sudo port -v sync
Warning: No index(es) found! Have you synced your source indexes?
Synchronizing local ports tree from rsync://trd.no.rsync.macports.org/release/ports/
rsync: failed to connect to trd.no.rsync.macports.org: Connection
refused (61)
rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at /SourceCache/rsync/
rsync-40/rsync/clientserver.c(105) [receiver=2.6.9]
shell command "/usr/bin/rsync -rtzv --delete-after
rsync://trd.no.rsync.macports.org/release/ports/ /opt/local/var/
macports/sources/trd.no.rsync.macports.org/release/ports" returned
error 10
Error: Synchronization of the local ports tree failed doing rsync
port sync failed: Synchronization of 1 source(s) failed

Here's the line in my /opt/local/etc/macports/sources.conf file:

rsync://trd.no.rsync.macports.org/release/ports/ [default]

Sure. That server is listed as "Temporarily offline". Try the ones in
Australia or France.

Personally, I'd do an "rm -rf /opt" and start over. The OP has
apparently screwed something up. A stock install that hasn't been
futzed with won't have these problems.
