The theory I've heard was that man was the best (long distance) runner
in the jungle and could run any other to death. If so, it would also
be difficult to eat with an ingrown nail.

Maybe caveman used long toenails for running traction??.
Say in sand, mud or soft earth.

Perhaps as an experiment, I'll let my toenails grow about 1" and go
running on the beach to see if it's easier.. :P

Not possible. They're too fragile.

They'll likely ingrow so you won't be running anywhere.

Nails are simply biological leftovers that are no longer useful, much
like body hair.

Had one of those as well so just cut it away and pulled out a section.
Not especially painful, but messy.
