MacSOUP does have a lovely thread map, but the rest of it is byzantine in complexity. Cheers, -- James Dore New College IT Officer james.dore(a)new / it-support(a)new

Unison is primarily a good binary client. BTW, there is a great difference between v < 2 and v >2 If you tried v1.8.1 or earlier you might want to look again. > Tried to get Thunderbird to work but for some reason it doesn't ask for > a password when connecting to Eternal-September.org so only shows the > local groups. MacSoup is a very efficient text only newsclient, once you master the peculiarities and inconsistencies in the user interface. You really have to RTFM. Jan

I'm not going to give a recommendation, but I will say that this question is one of those weird ones which historically has generated a massive number of threads of differing opinions in this group, worth having a trawl through the archives via google groups.... None of it. It's all learnt. MacSoup's no worse in that line than any other GUI app. Seriously - it's *NOT* particularly unintuitive, is MacSoup. It's just as intuitive as all the rest of the software on my Mac: i.e., not at all, you have to learn it from the manual, just like everything else. And MacSoup has a manual, which makes it possible to learn to use, unlike most other software. > > but for a lot of people here (myself included) it's > > simply the best newsreader out there assuming you only care about text > > groups. What a surprise that you bothered to make some sort of comment! It's a bit off of you - after all, that sort of behaviour could put people off asking basic sensible newbie questions! Blimey! > With respect I found that MacSOUP was impossible to use, and after > trying on two seperate occasions I have just simply given up. [snip] MacSoup is the only Mac news reader I can cope with using. But it took about 2-4 weeks of hating it like poison before I got the hang of it. Now, you could only get MacSoup away from me by prising it from my cold dead fingers. Or something like that. It's the graphical thread display that I can't do without. However: and I write as someone who's really bad at getting the hang of new software, MacSoup was very easy to pick up basic use of, and so on. MacSoup has a good manual, you see. If you follow it, it works. Young Gavin here strikes me as the sort of person who doesn't read manuals...
