Never had a problem with it before on Windows or Linux so I'm kind of
interested to figure out why it isn't doing it. I've already set it as
the faq link you gave suggests. It appears to be specific to
Eternal-September and maybe has something to do with them having, in
effect, a "guest" log in. Hmm.

Heh-heh. Seems to be the general concensus. Saying that, I managed to
get my head around GIMP which has to have THE WORST GUI of any
application ever.

I'll give it a whizz. Costs nothing to try. :-)

This is exactly the case. I've had to do it on the Mac and Linux
versions of Thunderbird. You simply need to make sure that the "Always
request authentication when connecting to this server" box is selected
under Server Settings for your eternal-september account.

No, it isn't. It's actually pretty simple, because there's not much to
learn, and the graphical thread display makes it the simplest News
client of all to use productively. But it's not much like other Mac
applications. However, with that degree of simplicity, it's rapidly
learnt.

It has what seems to be a decent manual, although I've hardly ever
looked at it. You can discover pretty well anything by noodling around.

No, it is specific to "needing to supply authentication" each time you
log in or post. The setting that you *still* haven't managed to
discover, is outlined in that link above and also brought to your
attention by chris's post, also in this thread.

Needing to supply authentication to log-on or post is not Eternal-
September specific, it is _news server_ specific to those news servers
that request it, Eternal-September just happens to be one of them.

Its just a simple check-box in Thunderbirds settings that you have
overlooked. Once checked you can forget about it.
