New to Macs - had 20 years of Windows and fancied something completely
different.
Anyhow...

On Windows, I used Microplanet Gravity. Is there anything equivalent?
Unison seems OK but the message threading is a bit poor compared to
Gravity, i.e subthreads end up on a new subject line whereas Gravity
put them under a single subject.

Tried to get Thunderbird to work but for some reason it doesn't ask for
a password when connecting to Eternal-September.org so only shows the
local groups.

Anyway, getting there slowly. Will no doubt be asking plenty more noob
questions to annoy everyone.

Take a look at MacSOUP <http://www.haller-berlin.de/macsoup/>

It will initially look like a massively confused mess and it can be as
unintuitive as hell, but for a lot of people here (myself included) it's
simply the best newsreader out there assuming you only care about text
groups. The graphical thread tree is second to none.

Blimy, not this thread again.

With respect I found that MacSOUP was impossible to use, and after
trying on two seperate occasions I have just simply given up.

Hogwasher is pretty good, but not free.

Thunderbird mimics pretty much how OE handles newsgroups, its not so bad.

But I now use Unison, its looks good and although has a couple of
annoyances is the one I felt most settled with.

Google Groups will have a thousend posts from this group with this
topic, I suggest you search for them as it really has been done to
death.

Well of course. And it won't be the last time either.

It's all a matter of taste, isn't it?

Once MacSOUP is set up (not terribly difficult, but needs doing) I have
found that it's extremely pleasant to use, but idiosyncratic. However,
there isn't that much to learn and for text groups, it's very capable
indeed. And as many people will tell you, the graphical thread display
combined with the list options make it (for me) the best news client out
there.

You will need to find _where_ in t'bird to set your username and
password for E-S, otherwise you will only get local (to
Eternal-September) groups.

Thunderbird works fine for usenet and Enternal-September. This is
something you have not configured correctly (so far).

See: <http://www.eternal-september.org/index.php?showpage=faq#Login-No-Auth>
to set up Thunderbird correctly.
