From: Terry Bourne on 28 Nov 2009 12:45 Johan 64 -Bit has been a bit slow to catch on to Laptops and some won't support it (you need an APIC at least - check your laptop's spec). The only real difference you will see is if you have more memory (than your current 2GB) and apps that need it. In fact some 32-Bit instructions are faster than their 64-Bit equivalents. Advice about drivers and older devices is correct. In fact systems requiring/ likely to benefit from 64-Bit probably have and need backup/restore configurations which will also require updating. I am very sceptical about blanket advice which says "Go 64" - it could be unnecessarily expensive or give rise to sleepless nights! From: Geoff Schaller on 28 Nov 2009 17:59 Johan. You have a 64 bit CPU. The advice they have given is total rubbish. Perhaps there were problems 3 years ago but almost ALL manufacturers of everything everywhere now have 64 bit drivers on their websites as routine. Totally routine. For Windows 7, simply obtain the Vista 64 bit driver and use it. In fact, if your hardware is as old as it sounds, it is very likely that all the motherboard and other devices in your laptop will already be in the W7 driver framework. Knock yourself out on 64. It is thoroughly worth it. From: Geoff Schaller on 28 Nov 2009 18:02 Terry, Your advice is quite erroneous and quite out of date. 64 bit is here and is great. No exceptions. This is like people telling me that SSD drives are no good as boot drives because they only have 10,000 rewrite cycles. That information (which is actually technically irrelevant) is also old news. Go 64, without exception. I challenge you to find the 'bad news'. Excellent! Now I'll tell you where the big benefits are: MS SQL Server, Excel, Visual Studio, anything needing graphics, and anything with a high disk transfer. The down side is that it takes more physical disk space to store stuff in 32bit because there is more space left over. Every item being saved is stored into the minimum space of a 64 bit word instead of 32.
