From: Stuart on 29 Dec 2009 16:21 Hi, I'm about to begin some MCITP Enterprise Administrator training and was hoping someone could give me a little advise on the kit I'm hoping to train on. I was hoping to be able to install Server 2008 R2 onto my Compaq G70 T5800 Laptop which accepts EMT64 instructions. I know that Server 2008 R2 is exclusively x64. I wondered if anyone had tried anything like this or saw any issues with this. Would I be right in saying that even though the processor is a Core2Duo T5800 x86, because it copes with EMT64 instructions it should work ok? I'm planning to buy a second laptop, probably a Dell 1545 with 3GB Ram to give me two machines to play around with. Would appreciate any advise. Thanks, Stuart
From: neo on 29 Dec 2009 16:30 I have installed Windows Server 2008 R2 on a Dell Latitude D630 w/out issue. The biggest thing is to make sure that you can find compatible drivers that work under this OS. (I used the Vista/Windows 7 x64 drivers so I could play around with HyperV. Note: HyperV is not possible with the processor you mentioned because the Intel page doesn't show it supporting Intel-VT. Other than that, it pretty much boils down to hardware and bios support for what you want to do.) From: Stuart on 29 Dec 2009 19:18 Thanks Neo, I think I will have to increase the funds a little to get a laptop that includes either Intel virtualization or the AMD-V equivalent. Regards, Stuart
From: Meinolf Weber [MVP-DS] on 30 Dec 2009 05:46 Hello Stuart, I suggest to use a machine which is able to run Hyper-V or any other free virtualization option with some more RAM, so you can use VMs for learning which can be easy built, deleted etc. You can use snapshots, as long as NO DC is in use where snapshots are NOT supported way of backup. Thanks everyone. In the end I've bought a Packard Bell laptop with 4GB of RAM and Athlon x2 QL-65 Processors. I checked the AMD site and it is listed as X64 and AMD-V compliant. Also the 70-680 Training manual arrived today and actually stated in the lab setup section that a pc with 4GB and dual cores would be able to host the VM's needed for the labwork. Now I can't decide whether I should charge ahead and install Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V and host the W7 VM's in there, so as to also have access to the Server 2008 R2 while I'm doing 70-680. The moment I pass 70-680 I want to start the core exams for MCITP-Enterprise Administrator, so it might be a good idea. Thanks again, Stuart |
