John,

Just curious: do you recall what the bugs were? I use Irfanview a
lot, but I'm always looking for something better :-)

When I wanted to view an image and was in the browser, I'd double click
on the image and it would never appear in a maximized window, no matter
how often I set it as such. That was one of the things I didn't like.
Can't remember what the other thing was.

Faststone works nicely for me now:

Might not work for everybody though. My needs in a viewer are fairly
simple since I have $ware graphics programs too.

I have a Canon compact camera. Ended up ignoring any camera transfer
software as card readers/writers are so cheap. And a card reader/writer is
required if you want to use the Canon Hackers Development Kit,
http://chdk.setepontos.com/ , never mind if all you want is to
transfer/move files from/to your memory card as you would with any typical
USB storage device.

I've had a card reader for a long time and it will read my camera's
cards. However, it's easier for me to plug my camera in because I have a
USB cable plugged into the back of my computer and the other end is
laying on my computer desk.

Thanks for pointing out that CHDK. Here's a good article on the program:

Unfortunately, my model (A1100IS) doesn't seem to be supported.
