That's annoying :-( I would first try with "nv" driver (no 3D accel) to discard the freeze coming from another source. The solution was upgrading X to the latest level and installing Nvidia's latest upstream driver: ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/195.36.15/ You have a link for your mobo? I'm not sure what you mean by that. xserver-xorg-video-nv will not modify your xorg.conf, you have to edit it by hand and replace "nvidia" with "nv", or just comment out the entire line, as Xorg should be able to automatically use the correct driver.
