Still there is no integrated pigeon coop. And that is essential if it's
going to do RFC 1149 networking.

The funny part is that calling their bluff works. Every single
time.

Afterall, other than what I proposed (and I still have not takers on
my offer), you can see a total absence of anyone even *daring* to
make their own firm prediction(s).

You can [insert here whatever description of scathing contempt that
you want] on our resident Trolls, and the bottom line remains the
same: we've all seen cockroaches in the bathroom at 3AM who have
exhibited more bravery than any of these "boys".

Maybe in your home.

Oh look: a cockroach appeared. But also note what is ...as was
expected... missing.

In your house? Only one? When you see one, there are thousands. But you
know that.

I always love the insults when I'm right on the mark.

It's not a question of being able to afford it. It's a question of
comparing the value of an iPad, for it's purchase price, to the value
and functionality of a Netbook priced at or below the same price.

With many Netbooks, you get either WUXGA output or HDMI output, or
both. You get 1 gig of RAM expandable to 2. You get a 160 gig SATA
drive expandable to 600 MB. All in a package that's about the same
length and width as an iPad but a bit thicker - to accomodate the
keyboard.

Smartbooks will come in at even lower prices, will have 1 gig of RAM
expandable to 2 a solid state drive, with extra SDHC slots and USB
slots for extra storage. Most will also have touch-screens and will
have external video connectors. Essentially the main difference
between the ASUS EEE and smartbooks is the touch-screen and ARM chip,
so that Microsoft can't claim that ASUS is promoting piracy the way
Napster did. ARM makes single-chip devices which include the video
display, the HDMI, the LCD driver, WiFi, and Cellular Phone
connection, as well as the touch-screen.

Multitouch is also possible on touch-pads and can be used on any of
the available displays. I have to admit I prefer track-balls to touch-
screens. These days on Linux, I've set "disable touchpad while
typing" and "don't touch to click". I get MUCH fewer unintended
curser jumps.

The touch-screen made sense for the cell phone and the PDA (iPod
Touch), but if the touch-screen limits your alternative display
options, it could be a liability.

I suspect we will be seeing better alternatives coming as well. Keep
in mind that UNIX/Linux also has support for input devices such a
gloves, inertial sensors, multiple analog joystics, 3D pointing
devices, ultrasonic detection of hand positions of one or more hands,
and inertia detectiors similar to the Wii.

Linux can support multiple input devices, and up to 16 signals each in
addition to the mouse which can be used for scroll-bars or even
multiple track-balls. Linux also has interfaces to various joystick
devices.

The gamble apple has taken, is that people will be willing to pay as
much as $700 for a touch-screen with multi-touch interface rather than
a $250 SmartBook with some of the features described above.

Apple has over a hundred thousand "applications" but how many
calandars and how many versions of Tetris do you really need?
