I don't think any of the current phone OSes have simple toggles for those, they're always a couple of levels down from the front screen. The jailbroken tool to do that is SBSettings, which is indeed terrifically handy. I have mine set to show toggles for aeroplane mode, 3G, wifi, bluetooth, SSH, AFP and autolock. SBSettings, it is what I use on my jailbroken phone and it is why I would be loathed to unjailbreak it again to upgrade unless I knew I could get it back! -- Woody www.alienrat.com

I'd like to be able to: (1) turn the phone & WIFI radios off on a timer so they're idle overnight, (2) easily turn the phone radio off but leave wifi on (the phone interferes with a radio ot home), (3) silence the phone for a set time for when I forget to turn the ringer on again, (4) tell mail to use the 3G connection when port 25 is blocked on WIFI. None of these are irritating enough for me to jailbreak it yet though. Once you start thining about it there are lots of things you could do to save power - eg only turn on WIFI if the cell connection indicates you're in the region of a known network. Arthur

The devices do a very good job of reducing their power footprint without being disabled, so it's not a huge worry. Compare the battery drain in aeroplane mode with normal 3G-and-all-but-not-in-use, and there's not much difference. Cheers - Jaimie -- Beer has food value, but food has no beer value. |
