First, it isn't searchable. Therefore, it would not be a good place to
put group members if I want to look for them. Second, cut and paste
might be ok for a couple of tracks or CDs, but not a whole library.

I am back to trying to find a way to use the Artist field in Album view.

I just entered my middle name in an Iron Maiden comments field and then
entered my middle name in the search field and iTunes found it, so the
Comments field is searchable.

How did you test the search on your Comments field?

That's often a problem is dialog boxes. To work around it, I switch to TextEdit
(any text-oriented program will do), copy a line break, then switch to the other
app and paste it. Doesn't work in some apps, but it does work in the Comments
field in iTunes.

Yes. iTunes will search all the fields including Comments, assuming you haven't
changed the Search box from All to Artist, Album, or Name.

You can also create Smart Playlists that specifically search the Comment field.

It depends.

The Comments field is included in a search, *provided* that it is a
visible column in the current playlist. (View->View Options...->Comments)

If this is correct, it certainly seems an unusually dumb -- or anyway
unhelpful -- programming decision for what's supposed to be, among other
things, a sophisticated database for your audio files.
