My theory is that they have an arrangement with various hardware
manufacturers and that the intent is to impose a sort of artificial
planned obsolescence. Kind of like the way that my ancient Hewlett
Packard 855C printer has slowed *waaaaaay* down because it no longer has
internal fonts thanks to the XP driver. As a result, it has to print
everything graphically. They tried the same thing in ME, actually
producing a driver that made the output look like something from and
prehistoric dot-matrix printer. It only took me a little while to figure
out that the Windows 95 driver for the printer could easily be
installed, restoring full original functionality for the printer.

The computer industry is rife with corruption and greed, but we all know
that.
