I've been trying to find a way to get Emily a slightly better Mac than
the iBook she's currently got

I found one on eBay over the weekend that may do the job. An old G4
PowerMac MDD 1.25GHz with 1GB of RAM. No hard drive, or externals, but
at 50 I couldn't pass that up as a punt. Looks like it may have the top
end graphics card too.

I've a 200GB drive on the way, and I plan to clone/migrate her existing
drive over (a retail install of 10.5), and use the external as a Time
Machine box (320GB SATA in a FW400 enclosure). Benchmarks I found seem
to show this should be quite a bit quicker than the iBook.

Out of interest, what's reliability like for sticking a SATA card in
this for a bootable drive?

The iBook, as I've mentioned before is a little beaten up, but actually
performs just fine as a desktop box with an external monitor. It's
running off an external FW400 drive though [1], and is a tad slow with
some operations.

Is this worth flogging? FYI - last model 14" iBook 1.42GHz 1GB, and 60GB
drive, smashed screen and broken hinge.

Cheers.

[1] I could never be bothered with upgrading the drive on this.

Nice machines, but be warned - they can be loud.

I don't care, it'll be in Emily's room! Besides, it may teach her to not
break the laptop! :-)

Oh, well in that case there are probably a few things you can do to make it
louder :-)
