I *always* keep the Phasers covered by warranty, even if you only call
someone out once in three years it pays for itself. This is one of the
rare occasions when extended warranties seem worth it. IIRC the last
extended warranty I bought for a Phaser was about 150 for three years.

Of course, the ideal would be that they don't break down, but sadly
sometimes they do and a small company like ours can't really afford the
downtime.

I take an alternative approach. I buy secondhand Phasers. The problems
they suffer from are actually minor if you know how to fix them.

Blocked print nozzles (after all they are just an ink-jet even if the
ink is solid when cold). This can usually be fixed by using a nozzle
cleaning routine. The built-in routine is useless and there are
Postscript code snippets available on the web that are better. If it
can't be fixed then you need a new printhead. This is an easy job to do.

Another problem is poor installation. The printer *must* be absolutely
level otherwise it doesn't print well.

Heaters fail, they are easy to replace as well.

And that's about it.

I tend to buy two phasers and to swap parts from one to the other. That
makes then cheap and easy to fix.

Would you mind sharing some of your maintenance script sources and tips?
My 8560DN suffers from not being used enough and possible infant
overheating.
I get frequent jams doing photo quality on anything but card, and I
can't get anything like the colour gamut, even on self-test, that I
could when it was new. It eats yellow faster than black, which seems a
bit screwy to me and I'm blowed if I can get any colour profile to work
better than the in-printer settings.

Me too! I'd love to know what to do with the buggers when they fail.
Even though they're warrantied it's got to be a lot faster to DIY.

Umm sorry I forgot to add if the 850 service manual is of any use to you
I could let you have the PDF copy.
