I also use the handful of built-in command-line utilities (ftp, curl,
rsync, and so on) when the situation calls for it.

FWIW, Stanford University (which is generally pretty good at providing
utilities and helpful advice to the non-expert "ordinary users" among
its clientele) recommends and provides Fetch (and related documentation)
for those users.

I'm pretty sure I remember reading that it was a conscious decision by
Apple as well.
