I've got 3 LG Super-Multi DVD burners, all of which claim to support
DVD-RAM. However, the bundled software doesn't appear to work with the
later models, and the only downloadable drivers I've found are
propriatary BHA and Panasonic ones, that are described as working only
with specifice models or updateably only to original retail software.

I'd like to be able to use DVD-RAM as a removable hard disk under
Windows 98, Win2000, and possibly Linux, and am looking for freeware
that provides that functionality.

Is there any out there?

It's been a long time, since I went through this, so my information might be
long outdated and not help you at all. But with DVD-RAM, I found any bit of
info better than none.

The Panasonic drivers worked for me on all of my 3 different Pioneer models
with W98SE, as well as W2000. (XP has its own driver).
This was the original download page, but it's not working now:
http://panasonic.jp/dvdram/english/softdl/driver/down2000.html
The DVD-RAM device driver was called "2K2220NE.EXE".
Maybe you can google for it or it's the one, you've already got.

There's a second driver, which I can't remember, where it originated from,
but I used it in preference to the Panasonic one, because it was easily
installed/uninstalled and lacked any problems.
I shall call it "UDF-RAM driver" and it's download name is
"ReadDVD_W2_152b.exe"
It consists of a USB driver and a UDF-RAM driver. You only need the latter
one.
Google for it and you'll find a download link. It still works.

Both drivers (Panasonic and the UDF) will NOT co-exist with Nero's InCD UDF
packet writer.
So you can't run both ATST. It's one or the other.

I've moved on to XP now, which has native RAM-readability and I also moved
from DVD-RAM storage to external HDs (very cheap now and much preferable).
This would be my suggestion to you, it's sooo much faster, especially
firewire or SATA, but even USB.

However, on another note:
The UDF-RAM format (for read/write storage purposes) is not the same as the
DVD-RAM recorder format, recorded by stand-alone recorders.
This is different again, and if you ever wanted to directly write DVD-RAM as
movies (i.e. directly editing a DVD-RAM disc), there's a different driver
again, made by Toshiba.

I've seen all of these drivers working on Pioneer and Panasonic drives,
including the Toshiba one.
They should work ok on your LGs.
You won't break anything by trying, as they are easy to uninstall.

Good luck, mate

Clarification:

(i.e. directly editing a DVD-RAM disc), should mean:

directly editing a DVD-RAM movie on a DVD-RAM disc, so as to be readable
from a standalone recorder or any DVD player. (Yes, it exists).

Furthermore:
You were asking for SOFTWARE.
Just for sake of completeness, with these drivers installed, you only need a
file manager to copy/burn/shift your files.

Thanks, I was able to find and download it, as well as the Win9x
equivalent

google came up empty on that one.

I'd consider that option except for two problems:

1. I can't get my Win98 system to recognize any hard drives connected
via USB_IDE cable, although it has no problem enabling any of the LG
drives connected this way. With the hard drives, the hourglass appears
briefly, and then disappears, but there's no new drive.

2. My spare IDE hard drives are no bigger than 8GB, and take up
considerably more room than two DVD-RAMs in my very small media vault.

I'll try to keep it in mind, but right now I'm just looking for
convenient local data backup.

The 2 search result links indeed have frozen since this afternoon, but the
download location is still working:
http://omninet.interfree.it/ReadDVD_W2_152b.exe

Actually, I made a mistake with the above driver. I have it in storage as a
3rd alternative, but the one I ended up using was another driver from
Panasonic:
(I just found it with another search on my storage HD. I have years of
accumulated collections of all sorts. Please forgive me.)

"kxlcb30a.exe"

This one is the one with 2 options (USB driver and DVD-RAM driver). Try that
one first. Google has numerous entries on this one.
