I downloaded and installed this program, hoping it would be something
that could clone my main hard drive's main partition to my backup hard
drive's backup partition and do it incrementally.

Good news is that it's incremental, bad news is that it doesn't do a
genuine clone on my XP Home SP2 computer. This is because the following
files couldn't be copied because of Error 32 - "The process cannot
access the file because it is being used by another process":

C:\Documents and Settings\(my user name)\ntuser.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\(my user name)\ntuser.dat.LOG
C:\Documents and Settings\(my user name)\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\(my user name)\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat.LOG
C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\NTUSER.DAT
C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\ntuser.dat.LOG
C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat.LOG
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\EventCache\(some CLSID).bin
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\default
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\default.LOG
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SAM
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SAM.LOG
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SECURITY
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SECURITY.LOG
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\software
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\software.LOG
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\system
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\system.LOG

This failure to copy the registry, AFAIK, would mean that the backup
partition would be unable to start Windows, at least without more than
the default registry settings.

Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

So, effectively, the program doesn't do anything that XXCopy doesn't do
when run in XP. In fact, the files above are the same ones that XXCopy
can't copy. However, Karen's Replicator does have a nice graphical
interface and for my purposes, the settings are much easier to set since
I don't have to worry about command line parameters and the like.

It also produces a nice log of the task you run and the log is
configurable to either include or exclude the following:

Job Summary
Errors
Warnings
Deletions
Up-To-Date Files
Exclusions
Successful Copies

I guess it's a keeper, but I still would like to be able to
incrementally clone my main partition (non-compressed) to my backup hard
drive so that if my main drive fails, all I have to do is to yank it and
hook up the backup (slave) drive as the master drive to be back in
business until the replacement hard drive arrives.

NOTE!!!!!! Having a backup hard drive is only ONE... repeat!

of the backup strategies I use. No preaching to me about how to back up
my $#!%?%! data, PLEASE!

You`re correct John.
Sadly it appears to be one of the few times when a payware
program has to be used.
And for what it`s worth, I use SyncBack for the rest of what
you talked of in your post.

Hi John:

I hope you will see this as informative rather than preachy, but there's
an article here that discusses accessing VSS copies under XP. You may
find it interesting or even useful.

Cheers.

Karen has alway been IMO one of the most competent freeware authors. You
might contact her with the above, long ago she answered me, may not these
days due to spammers, but your comment may improve the product. The
recent updates in Replicator may indicate response to user comments.

Let's not give up the ghost just yet ... NTOS distributions, since at
least NT 4.0, have included a system state back up utility. If you're
able to manipulate the files in /that/ backup (ie uncompress & dump to
sub-dir) then Karen's can grab it.

So, it'd look like this:

1) run the system state backup proggie for your flavor of NTOS
2) extract files
3) run Karen's to exclude open system state files and include archived
system state files.

Hopefully this could be automated w/scheduling services & autoHotKey (or
whatever that's called). Btw, stepping back a bit, have you contacted
Karen about this? I understand she's responsive ... in between
point-releases that is <grin>.
