I hope this is the right place for this question. I'm making a Web
site in the space my ISP provides. The user interface is "edit your
html files on your computer and upload them with FTP". So I'm running
into something I've run into before: if I save a file with the .html
extension, and I try to edit it in NeoOffice or TextEdit, I get a
preview, not the source. So I've been working on the source files
as .txt, and each time I'm ready to try a new version, I copy it,
rename the copy to .html, and upload it. Is there a better method?

I'm using 10.4.11 with Intel. Hey, when did I get this machine,
anyway?

You need a different editor. I'd try this one (free):

Huh. I have no idea what's going on there.

Double-clicking opens it in a browser. (I use Firefox.) I open it
from the File menu of TextEdit.

Yes, and it works, but I'd rather use a full-screen editor. I've also
forgotten a lot about vi from when I used it in the olden days.

No. Many thanks to you and Steven Fisher for the suggestions of
different editors. I'll try those.

(You've got an extra "by" there. And you may not care that you won't
see this, or maybe someone will reply and you will see it.)

Use a better editor, such as the free and very awesome TextWrangler.

As suggested, try BareBones Software's free TextWrangler or their
powerful BBEdit, the Mac platform text editor of choice for serious work.

Simple solution for using TextEdit per original question:
TextEdit>Preferences>Open and Save tab,
Under the "When opening a file" heading,
CHECK the box "Ignore rich text commands in HTML files."
or,
Use TextEdit "Open" dialog to open an HTML file, and CHECK the box at
bottom "Ignore rich text commands."
