Mike, Sara- Sorry for the delay in responding...I've been offline for a variety of reasons, including the fact that I've been hobbled by a misbehaving computer; I'm preoccupied trying to play "catch up" on a lot of other things as well. Anyway, here's the skinny on PDFLab: I blindly followed the developer's instructions, which I didn't quite understand until after the fact. It turns out that PDFLab requires Java 1.4.2 (barely mentioned under "Requirements" in "PDFLab Help"). According to the Java FAQ on Apple's Development page (http://developer.apple.com/java/faq), this version has been "deprecated": "Which version of Java does Mac OS X include? Mac OS X Leopard comes with J2SE 5.0 preinstalled, based on JDK 1.5.0_13_b05. ... Mac OS X Leopard also includes JDK 1.4.2_13 which is deprecated. ..." Evidently, then, for PDFLab to work in Leopard, one needs to make a selection in Java Preferences.app (in Utilities folder), as follows: Java Preferences.app > "General" tab > "Java Applications" (bottom section). Select (i.e., click its checkbox) "J2SE 1.4.2". That's it. FYI NOTE: I'm running OS 10.5.8; PDFLab apparently isn't yet (as of today) compatible with Snow Leopard. (I've just sent him the link to the specific paragraph: http://www.macduck.com/news/macosxhints/2010/january/25/106-re-enable-java-1 42-and-java-15-apps-in-snow-leopard/. I'll let you know what he says.) -- iMac (24", 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 320 GB HDD) OS X (10.5.8)

Many thanks for getting back with this, Nick. It is much appreciated (and archived for whenever I'll be needing it again). Regards. -- dee

A bit complex for my tiny old brain, but it may be possible to have PDFLab running on SL with a little work. Regards. -- dee |
