Well, fingers crossed! Options are always good. :-)

| Have you tried Avast?
|

No. Mostly I was trying products based on this report:

http://www.matousec.com/projects/proactive-security-challenge/results.php

Unfortunately, those tests are also testing malware.
Likewise, Online Armor is designed to block malware,
control running programs, etc. I don't want that. I just
want a good firewall. So the reports at matousec have
to be taken with a grain of salt. But their report on
Avast also says it doesn't block all outbound traffic.

There are so many firewalls, and it's hard to test
them well. A lot of them I've filtered out just because
they're so bloated. I tried Comodo, Outpost and PCTools.
I don't remember now what I found with those, but I seem
to remember them just being overproduced and bloated.

That's a bit radical for non-socialist countries.
I'd be happy with a little regulation that prevents
them from exploiting a monopoly. But the US has
a long history of valueing freedom over civility. Our
system is a somewhat orderly version of King of the Hill.
And the people on the hill pay Congress handsomely
to stay there.

Our cable and phone companies
get away with hiding the actual cost of their products.
Our credit card companies are not different from
loansharks. Wall St. is essentially a casino for
the well dressed...

Microsoft has one of the biggest lobbying operations.
(Which is probably easily funded by their legal tax evasion
through offshoring).

So don't hold your breath waiting for Americans to
act. We mostly just vote for one corporate stooge
over another. We have to depend on Neelie Kroes and
the more civilized European countries to do our
regulation for us. :)
