As a test, I would disjoin the XP notebook from the domain (don't forget to
test a login with the local admin before you do this), add it to a temp
workgroup and the rejoin it with ConnectComputer. See if that fixes the
issue.

At least for the XP notebook this works!
The Vista machine doesn't.
Although I hardly have any error message, the profiles are not synchronised
with the server. It seems the Vista notebook has a time-sync problem (129)
and 2 User Profile Service warnings (1515 and 1511). And the profile is not
taken from the server. It is a new user I created for this test. At another
workstation I can opdate the profile (e.g. favorites)

within two minutes.
There were no errors during rejoin. And I can logon with the old users again.
