I was taught the same, and for me the continued use of the double space
is simply habit. I just do it.

I wonder if it would be possible to write a 'bot to converse with the
three of them... I suspect the effort would fail due to a desire to
make the program far too complex.

I know I am going to be REAL sorry I entered this particular argument,
both my AMA and AP Style books both say punctuation is usually omitted
from abbreviations constituting compound words or phrases. Thus, ATT and
IBM would be correct. The exception would for those that aren't usually
capitalized. Thus, freight on board would be f.o.b.

I find even in a monospace environment that double spaces are jarring
to my eyes. But I stopped using them in the late '70s when I was
setting type on a Compugraphic IV phototypesetter.
