But of course, according to Apple, "Mac OS X" is actually pronounced
"mack oh ess ten".

No. It's Ox80020063. (That error code appears every time I try to burn.)

I tried 2x and that failed with the same error message. I tried 1x and
still got the same error message.

I just treid ITunes again see it's not appropriate for my needs, because
I want the DVDs for general storage -- not just for music or films.

I tried restarting from another drive with OSX but without having
installed Patchburn, but again I got the same error message and failed
burning. It says 0.0 percent of the DVDs are burned.

It shouldn't be a case of using the wrong media, because they're Apple DVDs.

This is a tough case to solve.

That's a good point. I'm used to reading "x" as "ex", though, and "10"
as "ten".

I know they are, but your burner isn't one originally installed by
Apple. Original Apple equipment would never need Patchburn, so when the
vendor told you that you would need Patchburn, he was indirectly telling
you the burner is an aftermarket item.

With that error message, it's not a software problem, so it'll happen
regardless of which hard drive, or operating system, you boot from.

I've responded to this already, but if you have someone who can lend you
another brand of disc to try, it's worth the effort. I wouldn't go out
and buy another brand just yet, but if someone can hand you one, give it
a try.

What I _would_ recommend buying, because it's useful to have anyway, is
a CD/DVD lens cleaner. They're available most any computer, music or
office store, cost around US$10, and are as easy to use as playing an
audio CD. Even if it doesn't have any impact on this problem, you may
well end up using it again.
