From: Graham Mayor on
If you access a news server other than msnews.microsoft.com, then nothing
much will change - except the volume of traffic directed from the Microsoft
help forums will have been lost. That help will be sited on the Answers
forum and to access that with a newsreader you will need the bridge
software. Thereafter it all looks much as before. If you access by the
Microsoft server, then the likelihood is that you will have to find another
newsserver to continue to access the dwindling traffic on these groups.
There will be people to support the groups for as long as people continue to
post to them - regardless of what Microsoft chooses to do.

From: abrielle on
I have managed to set up these groups on my laptop so decided to sort things
out on my desktop PC.

No success - the connectnews.microsoft.com is visible but when I try to
download a list of groups, I get the message that WLM cannot connect to the
Internet, possibly because of av software or a firewall (wlmail.exe). This
is strange as all my mail is downloaded plus the 'old' newsgroup messages.

Am I missing something here?

From: Doug Robbins - Word MVP on
If you right click on Connectnews.microsoft.com and select Properties and
then go to the Server tab, what is shown for the Server Name? It should be
127.0.0.1.

If you go to the Advanced tab, what appears for the Server Port Number? It
should be 120

Hope this helps.

From: abrielle on
Thanks, Doug.

It appears to be working OK now - I had the same problem with my laptop but
later I did not get the 'WLM could not connect ...' message.

I have also found that my 'normal' Live ID address works rather than the one
I was given on the Answers/Connect website yesterday - I have no idea what
that was about!

When I got that message on my laptop, it was because I'd forgotten to
