But the difference between you and The Phat Phuck is that you don't
take the bus.

A rocket scientist? Or are you a security guard at an aerospace
firm? Do you get to carry a gun? A .22?

Not a chance. I visit Outside on occasion... such as a funeral.

Otherwise I am able to *totally* avoid it.

I used to visit every ten years or so. The appreciation level
for where I live got so high, I don't need a booster any more!

Probably in Barstow!

Anyone who would trade Maryland for Southern California, is nuts! Do
yourself a favor. Visit the area first... see the pollution, the crime,
and the insane traffic and you will run like hell back to MD. And if you
HAVE to come here, rent don't buy. It's getting cheaper to buy each
day... and six months from now it will be 'foreclosure city' in CA.

I don't know where in MD you are but anywhere there has to be better
than anywhere here.

YMMV.

But are there any polar bears in MD?

It really is all a matter of where in CA you chose to live. I have a 5 minute
commute (plus a 10 min walk from where they place the parking lots). I also
found a house I could afford with a regular fixed rate mortgage on a starting
professor's salary. Now, LA proper can be nasty, but you can find some okay
areas within a 60-90 mile radius of it. Check what area exactly the job is
in, since they often advertise "LA area" for quite a large geographic region.
Some folks (particularly marketting people) even consider where I live to be
the "LA area" even though a few rather large mountains seperate us. I have
actually known a few people who work in LA that live around here, but then
we're getting into the nasty commute time issue. It takes a good 90 minutes
just to enter the LA basin from here, assuming that the road is open (closes
for snow during the winter).
