That's strange because my old G5 iMac was running OS 10.4.11 and I transferred my files from that to this new iMac running 10.6.4 using Tranfer Assistant without any trouble at all. I just needed to buy a 8 pin firewire cable and "bob's your uncle" it was done in about 2 hours. No sweat. It's what I suspected. Target Mode worked fine, but from > 10.4.11 to 10.6.4, Migration Assistant didn't want to play. It seems to have struck a problem in your case, but Migration Assistant is supposed to be able to migrate from 10.4 to 10.6. I've done it at least once, from a PowerBook G4 running 10.4.11 to a Mac Mini which was probably running 10.6.3 (might have been 10.6, before I installed the updates). There may be something unusual about your 10.4.x system (or a bug in Migration Assistant for 10.6.4?) which is causing the problem. You may be able to find more information by looking at the log saved by Migration Assistant (if it actually got far enough to create the log). You can view it in Console (in /Applications/Utilities). If the log list on the left side is not visible, click "Show Log List", then click the reveal triangle to see the contents of /Library/Logs. The one you want is called "SystemMigration.log". Judging from what is in mine, it logs everything that happens including discovery of all connected disks, so it may provide a useful hint about what went wrong. > But I'm not in a hurry; I'll just have to do it manually, as I always > have in the past. -- David Empson dempson(a)actrix.gen.nz

No sweat. Well, the Firewire connection worked fine, in that the FW symbol appeared on the old iMac and bounced slowly round the screen, but Transfer Assistant told me that it couldn't find a copy of OSX on the other (old) iG5. As I said, I'm doing manual transfers, and as usual am learning about that I actually have here. And doing some pruning. So maybe no bad thing. -- Peter
