From: Paul Magnussen on 29 Nov 2009 15:39 My G4 (OS 10.4.11), which I've had for many years, has suddenly started making 5 or 6 loud clicks when it boots up, or wakes from sleep. I presume (without proof) that this is from disc seeks, since apart from that everything functions normally. Is this cause for alarm? And if so, what should I do about it? Paul Magnussen

Take a backup of all your data as soon as possible! - These clicks sound to me that it is the harddisk that is about to leave this world for good. To me it sounds like the 'death-warning' from an old TravelStar disk. - I've heard these clicks twice on older PowerBooks with TravelStar harddisks and each time the disk died shortly after.... Since it's a G4, I'll recommend to replace the disk with a WesternDigital Scorpio. You can get a 320gb for reasonable amount of money - apprx. $100USd - maybe less depending on where you're living... My guess would be a hard drive going Tango Uniform.

To be safe, you should be sure to back up everything on the drive in case it's headed for failure. After you back up, you can run some diagnostic utilities on it, such as Disk Utility's "Verify Disk" function, to see if any error are reported. You might also check your "system.log" to see if any I/O errors are being reported there. Such errors are a good indication the drive is experiencing problems. -- Send responses to the relevant news group rather than email to me.
