The converse however is true. I'd like to see any DSLR owner master all the controls and commands available to any CHDK enabled P&S camera in less than three months. http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_User_Manual http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/UBASIC/TutorialScratchpad http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/LUA#Lua_Scripting_language_for_CHDK http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/PropertyCase Mind you, these are additional to all the controls that are already available in these cameras, most all of them with full manual control as well. If not, then CHDK gives them full manual control anyway. I doubt they'd even know how to use the available RGGB curves editor for CHDK to create custom color-balance/luminance curves for their camera. That's relatively simple compared to all the other things that these P&S cameras can do.

At this point, I'm not convinced it's a great idea to get a camera that won't work decently without 3rd party firmware.

I guess that depends on your definition of "decently". All these camera models sell fine to thousands of people without CHDK. Many of them even surpass the image quality coming from DSLRs these days. Some even rival the image quality of a medium-format Hasselblad. They work decently, or they wouldn't sell. CHDK just makes them more decent. Even more decent than any DSLR on earth. That's why there's a whole section at the CHDK forum of DSLR owners who are desperately trying to find ways to get just a minor subset of CHDK's functionality ported into their own cameras. But then, these functions are only of interest to very advanced and highly creative photographers. I doubt they'd interest you very much.
