And [see my other posting] if so, this rules it out for any
Windoze/Linux user or anyone not interested in owning a computer.

But to *really* support solo use it would also need some way for doing
backups without a computer and this requires more than just some
software changes in the OS. And it would need some way to get your own
content (music, books, movies, ...) onto it without iTunes.

If you don't need all of this, you can use it without a computer anyway.
But there is a huge gap between "you don't really need a computer" and
"usage without a computer is fully supported".

As with many other things I think that Apple will add these sooner or
later, but I'm pretty sure that this will not be the case in the next
days.
