So you *really* think people who don't want the full panoply of a computer would want to do a (partial) backup by copying some files and folders to an USB-stick and to restore from that? Why do you think the iPhone does a full and automatic backup when you connect it to your computer and allows a one-button restore? > So maybe I'm missing something, or Apple really have screwed up. I don't think so. Sooner or later they will have some way to do all things you now need iTunes for via the cloud instead (Mobile Me probably) and as long as this isn't ready you'll need a computer with iTunes. Supporting everything hackish in between would mean they'd have screwed up. Apple is finishing a new $1 billion data center right now: http://www.datacenterknowledge.com/archives/2010/02/22/first-look-apples-massive-idatacenter/ What do you think this monster is for? They were very nearly right. It has a few more things, like you can get 3G data card included, and attach a keyboard, and has Apps and UI better tuned for the bigger screen. But basically it is a big ipod and needs a computer for the syncing with itunes. It doesn't have Finder (or a user visible file system) so you can't just copy your mail folders and so on to anywhere. It's all done by syncing with iTunes. -- Andy Templeman <http://www.templeman.org.uk/>
