Hold option, hit restore, select the file and see what happens the second time, and leave it in the mean time to its own devices. -- Woody www.alienrat.com

It had a picture of a USB plug and iTunes on the screen. Then it downloaded the update (12 minutes here, 8 hours in Scotland) went through various reboot cycles [1] and eventually came up working again! ;-) He then plugged it into his W7 laptop to try to re-sync all his music etc but it didn't see it as 'an ipod', only giving him the option to restore (so he did, again). Then it went back round again so this time he deleted the ipsw file (thanks for that) and that forced it to download a new copy and again, did a restore but wouldn't come up. A second attempt seemed to work for some reason and he was then able to re-sync ok. Luckily they had daughters little Phillips GoGear 'Spark' mp3 player to use on the journey down. ;-) Thanks again for the help. T i m [1} I like the Windows notification sounds (possibly because I'm a technician and actually interested in the hardware) like when the iPod rebooted, disconnected itself then reconnected. From a diagnostic POV it was good to know it had done so.

Just out of curiosity and not necessarily relevan - was he running his win 7 in 64 bit mode? I know there are some programs on Windows that don't like 64 bits - and the more expensive versions have an XP simulation (really a virtual mode. It would be intersting for the possibe future to know. -- duncank

Well, I'm not sure if I got the quoting right (still getting used to MacSOUP) but I wondered if, when the iPod was plugged into the Win 7 laptop and caused problems again (above), if the Win 7 version was running in 64 bit version. It is really curiosity as I will need one Win 7 system and I was wondering if 64 bit version caused probems with iPods and, particularly synching iPhones. (and my quoting setup in MacSOUP really does seem to be getting the >s out of synch). -- duncank |
